In addition to the product version that is specified in the "Applies to" section, this security update is meant to be used with the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package. You cannot apply this security update to any other editions of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1.Note The Microsoft Download Center update KB numbers for Visual C++ Redistributable packages differ from the SMS, ConfigMgr, WSUS and MU update KB numbers. The full versions of the fixed Visual C++ 2005 and 2008 redistributable packages (KB973544, KB973551, and KB973552) are listed on the Microsoft Download Center only as these are full new versions of the products. The updates listed on SMS, ConfigMgr, WSUS, and MU (KB973923, KB9739234) are updates only for customers who have previously installed vulnerable versions of the Visual C++ redistributable packages. These updates are not the versions on the download center. Microsoft does not recommend customers redistribute any version other than the full versions that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center (KB973544, KB973551, and KB973552).

Microsoft distributes fixes in service packs. Service packs keep a product current. They include hotfixes and software updates. Service packs may also include system administration tools, drivers, and additional components. These updates and components are conveniently bundled for easy downloading.Service packs are cumulative. Each new service pack contains all the fixes that are in previous service packs, together with any new fixes. You do not have to install a previous service pack before you install the latest one. For example, you do not have to install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 1 (SP1) before you install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Why do the Microsoft Download Center update KB numbers for Visual C++ Redistributable packages differ from the SMS, SCCM, WSUS and MU update KB numbers? The full versions of the fixed Visual C++ 2005 and 2008 redistributable packages (KB973544, KB973551, and KB973552) are listed on the Microsoft Download Center only as these are full new versions of the products. The updates listed on SMS, SCCM, WSUS, and MU (KB973923, KB9739234) are updates only for customers who have previously installed vulnerable versions of the Visual C++ redistributable packages. These updates are not the versions on the download center. Microsoft does not recommend customers redistribute any version other than the full versions that can be downloaded from the Microsoft Download Center (KB973544, KB973551, and KB973552).

Finally, security updates can be downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog. The Microsoft Update Catalog provides a searchable catalog of content made available through Windows Update and Microsoft Update, including security updates, drivers and service packs. By searching using the security bulletin number (such as, "MS07-036"), you can add all of the applicable updates to your basket (including different languages for an update), and download to the folder of your choosing. For more information about the Microsoft Update Catalog, see the Microsoft Update Catalog FAQ.

Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 can take a long time to install and may apply to multiple products on your machine, appearing to install multiple times. This is a large service pack and installs a lot of files, fixing many issues and adding several new features to over 200 Visual Studio 2005 editions.

The installation experience begins when you download the service pack. There are many service packs, split up for Visual Studio 2005 Standard, Professional, and Team editions; and for Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Services according to written languages. This optimizes patch size by sharing most of the files for each product in a single embedded cabinet within the .msp file. For Express editions, patch packages are split up for each project language, which optimizes patch size because most of the files are world-wide binaries across project languages resulting in smaller .msp files. Download whichever service pack packages are appropriate for which products you have installed in your environment.

This SP release is a pretty major service pack, and incorporates a lot of bug-fixes and feedback from customers. Included built-in with the service pack is support for VS 2005 Web Application Projects (which we also made available as a separate download back in May). It also contains a number of design-time performance optimizations and fixes across the product.

The service pack itself is a fairly large download (431Mb), and can take 30-90 minutes to update your Visual Studio 2005 installation depending on which versions of VS you have installed, and what features are enabled. So you should plan ahead and not expect it to be a few second operation (note: it is a good task to kick off before lunch or in the evening).

Vista's user account protection caused problems with Visual Studio 2005, and Microsoft addressed this with the Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista. I'm having similiar problems running VS2005 on Windows 7, but I can't find any info from Microsoft directly addressing this. Should I just install the Vista service pack onto Windows 7?

The final release of Visual Studio 2013 became available for download on October 17, 2013, along with .NET 4.5.1.[190] Visual Studio 2013 officially launched on November 13, 2013, at a virtual launch event keynoted by S. Somasegar and hosted on events.visualstudio.com.[191] "Visual Studio 2013 Update 1" (Visual Studio 2013.1) was released on January 20, 2014.[192]Visual Studio 2013.1 is a targeted update that addresses some key areas of customer feedback.[193]"Visual Studio 2013 Update 2" (Visual Studio 2013.2) was released on May 12, 2014.[194]Visual Studio 2013 Update 3 was released on August 4, 2014. With this update, Visual Studio provides an option to disable the all-caps menus, which was introduced in VS2012.[195]"Visual Studio 2013 Update 4" (Visual Studio 2013.4) was released on November 12, 2014.[196]"Visual Studio 2013 Update 5" (Visual Studio 2013.5) was released on July 20, 2015.[197]

Make sure to apply the Service Pack 1 if you are using an older version of Visual C++ 2005 Express. If you are using Windows Vista for development, you will need Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista, too. Note: if you use the web installer that download data during install, then service packs are already included, no manuall install required (current SP is 2).

It would be great if the release notes went into more detail and described exactly what they mean. I'm not sure what the consequences are, but I installed SP4 on several 2005 instances and have yet to see an issue where I needed to install Visual Studio. I have a hard time believing that Visual Studio is now a prerequisite for a SQL Server service pack.

Chris, not sure why you think we'll only get 2 CUs for SP4? SP3 I understand.About Visual Studio, I assume that you mean, "if you use Visual Studio to connect to SQL Server, you will need to apply VS SP1 so it will play well with SQL 2005 SP4." I certainly didn't need to install Visual Studio to apply service pack 4 to my 2005 instances. ?A

The upgrade may not be easy! SP1 takes anywhere from 20 minutes to 1 hour to install. Ultimately, I had to uninstall Visual Studio 2005, reinstall, then apply the service pack. My VS2005 installation didn't just uninstall either. I had to manually remove files.

Another special case is that you see multiple Microsoft Visual C++ versions with the same redistributable packages or some versions from the same year. For instance, you may see multiple Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable. In this case, it may indicate that one of them is a service package, while others just have slightly different version numbers. 2ff7e9595c
